Plans are finalizing for staff attendance at various Graduate Fairs in the U.S. Here is where we will be going:
UT San Antonio, Trinity University, University of Chicago University of Illinois / Urbana-Champaign
UT Austin, Texas A&M, University of San Diego, University of California, San Diego, San Diego State, Rutgers, Columbia, NYU, Northwestern, University of Maryland
The fall seminar series has started and we will be hosting speakers from Baker Hughes, the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor, Inoperant, Rice Career Center, Lockheed Martin, Texas Healthcare and Bioscience Institute, RCEL, Center of Written, Verbal and Oral Communication, Geosyntec Consulting, GE Oil & Gas, Element Markets and Shell.
Corporate and faculty luncheons will be offered to our students to allow them close visits with corporate representatives and faculty advisors. A variety of topics and speakers have been lined up for the Professional Development Topics series offered in collaboration with the EPMP programs in Duncan Hall.
This summer we visited with many of our interns at their work sites such as NASA - Jacobs Engineering, Cheniere Energy, Element Markets, Nanoridge, Rice Alliance, and others. Due to the downturn in the oil industry, several of our geoscience students completed academic internships in lieu of corporate internships. We appreciate our faculty welcoming our students into their research and allowing them to complete the required internship experience for their master's degree. Some of our international students accepted internships in their home countries and their proactive approach in securing positions showed their self-motivation and initiative in exploring a variety of options available to them for fulfilling their internship requirement. Finding an internship is a process that starts as soon as our students come to campus!
A new course was added this summer to be offered this fall for the Environmental Analysis and Decision Making student group: EBIO 580 Sustainability Development and Reporting. This course was created from an initiative started by members of the PSM Board of Affiliates in collaboration with our Oversight Faculty for this program track. Dr. Lester King, Fellow at the Shell Center for Sustainability, and board member Ron Huijsman from HUCO Consulting are the instructors for this course combining a wealth of knowledge to be passed on to our students. Dr. King specializes in sustainable development and the development of context sensitive solutions for urban development. Ron Huijsman manages his own company offering centralized compliance systems helping companies to achieve significant cost benefits and mitigate compliance risk by providing tools that monitor and track their environmental, health and safety impacts.
With a focus on Rice undergrad students we are spreading the word about opportunities for Rice students to line their study plans up to create a pathway into our professional master's degree which - with good planning - they could finish in a 5th year of studies at Rice, completing their B.S. and their M.S. degrees back-to-back.
We also have seen a higher interest in our dual PSM/MBA tracks by incoming students who have to apply to both programs at the same time to be able to qualify for this opportunity.
Prospects, friends and students are encouraged to become a PSM Facebook Site Friend to see photos of all our recent activities and be kept informed about upcoming events.
